Avoid the temptation
If you’re thinking about beginning your lean journey with 5S, go directly to jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.
5S is a popular launching point and for good reason: it’s easy to grasp and provides immediate benefits to team members. Be aware however of the give a man a fish trap, there's a reason that area looks so much better now than before.
Do your team members know what to look for in terms of waste?
Do they know that they have the autonomy to maintain their work areas?
Do they understand the benefits of doing such?
Real transformation begins with having the eyes to see, how will you teach them to fish?

That is the question
Think for a moment about your organization's training programs, how would you rate them?
Truth is, training takes place every day in your facility whether or not you're aware. A more important question is, if employee training isn't being driven by company leadership, who's driving it?
When employees have to learn for themselves, the company loses control over the message. Bad habits and incorrect methods perpetuate, causing havoc to maintenance programs, quality audits, production schedules, standard costs, safety and not to mention, customer satisfaction.
Think about the training room in your facility for a moment, how often does it sit idle as a percentage of operating time?
If you're a one shift operation, how many of the 480 minutes/day is the room scheduled for training? 3%? 6%? 10%? During that time, who is receiving the training? Management? Supervision? Employees?
One of the biggest concerns with creating a dynamic enterprise training program is cost. In reality, when done correctly, training is an investment that pays dividends down the line. From employee engagement and retention to adopting the latest technologies to staying ahead of the competition, training should receive as much consideration as any other capital investment.
There's no time like the present to start, why wait for finance? If all you have is a Commodore 64, write your training in BASIC:

Much more than turkey
One of the most important tenets of building a lean culture in your organization is servant leadership. On this Thanksgiving, in addition to being thankful for everything that enriches us personally, let us also remember to be thankful for those who help us professionally.
From all of us at Cinilogix, enjoy a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
And one last thing, please remember to support local businesses on Small Business Saturday. Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy and there are many who work hard to bring us local and regional products and services that exceed expectations.

Why it might be time to move
A famous claims survey conducted by Progressive Insurance revealed an astonishing fact: 52% of car accidents happen within five miles of your home. Five miles!
There's no need to worry though. According to Realtors, with supply this high, there's never been a better time to buy a new home.
According to the banks, with interest rates this low, there's never been a better time to secure a mortgage.
Feel better? All you have to do is move and you're 52% less likely to be involved in a crash. Or are you?
Is your business paying attention to the right numbers?

How well do you know P&L?
Think about your company's P&L for a moment. There are only three ways to increase net income:
We all know that a commitment towards eliminating waste and improving productivity can lower costs, but what if we said that continuous improvement efforts could also lead to increased revenue?
Ask any member of your sales team if it would be easier or harder for them to increase business if you could guarantee the right product, in the right quality, in the right place, at the right time.

Mean Time Between What?
Many manufacturing facilities are familiar with MTBF, or, Mean Time Between Failure. It's a measure of the average time between failures in a system during normal use, measured as (Total uptime)/(Total number of breakdowns).
Certainly many companies excel at tracking this and other maintenance related metrics, the data that is ascertained is then used to create preventative maintenance schedules, plan parts inventory levels and so on.
How many of us calculate Mean Time Between Wins at our facilities? Wait, Mean Time Between What? It's easy to point out when team members do something wrong but we should never forget to point out when they do something extraordinary as well. If a cellular team performs a 5S audit of their area that reduces motion and transportation while increasing throughput, celebrate it! If a team member creates a plan to reduce WIP inventory, celebrate it! Two departments work together to reduce variation in product attributes? You guessed it, celebrate!
Now, begin to calculate your MTBW. As team members become aware of other's accomplishments, it will help to create a culture of continuous improvement. Oh, one last thing, unlike MTBF, you want to strive for a very short MTBW.
